Anteating Chat (Myrmecocichla formicivora)

The Anteating Chat is a small bird perches on the top of anthills and small bushes watching for insects and other prey.

The flight pattern is very distinct. When flying the Anteating Chat shows a white patch on each wing. This is not visible when perched.

The Anteating Chat feeds on the ground, where it hops about feeding on insects, ants, termites, beetles and caterpillars.

The Anteating Chat likes open grassland where termite mounds are found. It is distibuted over most of southern Africa.

The Anteating Chat nests in a burrow, which it digs, in Antbear holes or banks of streams. The nest is lined with dry grass.
