Dung Beetle

The Dung Beetle uses dung to lay eggs in and also as food. The Dung Beetle collects fresh dung, lays its eggs in it, rolls the dung into a ball and then rolls the ball with its back legs, into its nest in a burrow. The eggs hatch in the dung and have food immediately available.

The lower picture shows a ball of dung in a cross-section of a dung beetle's nest. The nest is down a burrow. The nest is lined with dung mixed with clay soil. The outer shell is also clay.
