Eurasian Bee-eater (Merops apiaster)
The Eurasian Bee-eater is the only
South African bee-eater with a brown back. The Eurasian bee-eater
is a gregarious bird. It roosts in flocks of up to 100 birds in
tall trees at night.
The Eurasian Bee-eater feeds in flight
on bees, insects, wasps, butterflies, mantids and termites. It perches
on a dead branch or twig and then swoops down on any insect it sees
from this high perch.
Habitat is Savanna and open woodland.
Birds ringed in Russia have been seen
as far south as Zimbabwe. There are Eurasian Bee-eaters that breed
in the southern parts of South Africa and do not migrate to Europe
in the southern winter.
