Pioneer ruin "Rondavel site"
One of the most fascinating remains on Silent
Valley, from past human occupation, is the rondavel site. It is difficult
to place any specific date in relation to the site as there is no cultural
material on the site that may lead us to some deduction. The wire that was
used (frugally) to strengthen the building does not appear to be very old,
so it would be guessed that we are looking at the period before and after
the depression years. The design of the building is best described by the
drawing shown (below left). It was built with clay bricks and was most probably
thatched.
The most peculiar thing about the site is the strange detail in geometric
layout that was followed. It may be argued that this was a place where a single
person (man) lived and that the peculiarity of the accommodation may be ascribed
to the fact that it was not necessary to tender for "family" life.
The stone circles may have been for trees but the purpose of the large circle
with three monoliths is completely unknown. The site is within 50 metres of
what must have been a permanent spring when the building was inhabited.
